Glen Eddy Retirement Community
Niskayuna, New York
Glen Eddy Retirement Community is modeled after residences
located in the General Electric Plot, a historically significant section of
neighboring Schenectady, set aside in the late 19th Century for the
executives of GE. Its “Prairie Style” architecture provides the expression and
illusion of a sprawling mansion style complex. Articulated gable fronts and
balconies, hallmarks of the mansions in the GE Plot, work in unison to provide
changes of planes and light, resulting in a residential scale along with unit
identity.
The community incorporates 86 independent living units, one
guest suite, 42 assisted living units and 16 cottages on a 33-acre rolling
site. Protected wetland areas provide a natural setting to the extensive
grounds. A landscaped courtyard located in the center of the community,
provides residents with easy accessibility to walking paths, putting green and
benches.
The focal point of the community is the entrance lobby
which is the “hub” of the Commons area, leading to dining areas, lounges,
activity rooms, library, wellness center and apartment wings.
The elegant dining room offers three sitting areas arranged
to provide varied dining experiences. The large windows in the main dining room
offer abundant natural light and panoramic views of the community and
surrounding areas.
The library is designed as a comfortable setting for
reading and socialization and includes a fireplace and views of the courtyard.
The centerpiece of the wellness center is the lap pool, which features a ceramic
tile mural from an original painting by a Glen Eddy resident artist.
Glen Eddy’s communication system is wired for telephone,
fax, cable television and computers. Each residential unit is equipped with an
IPAQ computer, which allows direct Internet access, as well as network
communication between residents and staff.
