Arkell Center
Canajoharie, New York
The plan for Arkell Center
called for adding 20 independent apartments, a senior center, and an art gallery
to an existing 24-bed adult home to create a senior retirement complex. The
design for the addition had to meet the challenges of a confined site and
attachment to the existing facility, an 1853 mansion. The senior center is
oriented between the new and existing buildings. The massing and materials of
the new building complement the mansion while offering a transition to the
wood-framed apartments. Arkell Center is designed to maintain the residential
character of the area, while complementing the grandeur of the mansion.
Honorable Mention. "Design for Aging: 1996-97 Review."
